WhenTaken rules and how to play
WhenTaken hands you one photograph a day and asks for two answers: where it was shot and when. You place a pin on the map, pick a year on the slider and submit the guess. This page walks through the deduction clues the site itself uses, how the archive works and what community games are.
What is WhenTaken?
WhenTaken is a daily photo guessing game from the teuteuf games studio. The premise is detective work rather than trivia: you are shown a real photograph and have to work out its location and year from what is visible in the frame.
The site runs three modes alongside each other: the daily game, an archive of past photos, and a community section where players create their own photo rounds. Everything plays in the browser.
How to play WhenTaken
Look at the photo first. The site's own examples show the kind of reasoning it expects: the side of the road cars drive on, a red double-decker bus, period fashion, old-style road signs, whether the shot is on film, and whether the buildings look like a historic city centre.
Place your pin on the map where you believe the photo was taken. Then move the slider to select the year, or type the year in directly; the slider spans from 1860 to 2026.
When you are ready, press the guess button. The round scores your pin and your year together, so a correct city with a wild year is still only half right.
Daily photo and archive
A new photograph appears as the daily game, and the archive keeps earlier ones so you can practise between rounds. The community section adds player-made games, with its own guidelines for what counts as a fair photo.
This page never shows today's photograph, location or year. Open the source link to take the round yourself before reading anything else.

Frequently asked questions about WhenTaken
What do you guess in WhenTaken?
Two things at once: the place where the photo was taken, marked with a pin on the map, and the year it was taken, set on the slider.
What years can I choose?
The year slider runs from 1860 to 2026, and you can drag it or type the year in directly.
Are old rounds still playable?
Yes. The archive keeps earlier photographs, and the community section holds player-created games in addition to the daily one.
Does WhenTaken tell me the answer?
It scores your pin and year after you submit your guess. This page never reveals the current photo, place or year.
